I would like to invite you to contribute to the Arts Auction for Choice 2009. This is the second year for this event, a beautiful evening of art, music and wine in support of Dr. Henry Morgentaler’s Legal Defense Fund to finance his law suit for improved access to abortion for women in New Brunswick. At present in NB (unlike anywhere else in Canada), women must receive the permission of two physicians to seek a publicly-funded abortion in hospital, and only two hospitals in the province perform the procedure. While women may self-refer to the Morgentaler clinic in Fredericton, patients must pay for the $750 procedure out-of-pocket, even though this is a medically necessary procedure covered by the Canada Health Act.
Last year the Arts Auction for Choice grossed $11,000, with $5,000 being donated to Dr. Henry Morgentaler’s Legal Defense Fund. At that point, Dr. Morgentaler was still pursuing “standing”- his right as a man to take a case forward on behalf of NB women. He was granted this right, but the province appealed the decision. As you likely heard, last week the NB court of appeals upheld Dr. Morgentaler’s right to “standing”. As such, his lawsuit can finally move forward. The auction provides a modest but meaningful contribution the dramatic cost of this endeavour. I hope you will contribute to this event.
The Arts Auction for Choice 2009 will be held on June 25 at The Palate in Fredericton. If you wish to contribute a piece, please contact me immediately and we can arrange for pick up/drop off. Although last year it was 40%, this year artists will receive 50% of the auction price of contributed works. Please indicate reserve price and value, as well as the title and materials of the work. Also, please send a bio for inclusion in the catalogue. As with last year’s event, a guest auctioneer and MC, lovely hors d’oeuves and wine, live music, and a speaker will all be part of the event. Please contact me for further information.
